Training Class Attendance

Training Classes for Puppies and Older Dogs

Most courses consist of 8 weekly classes.  The classes for The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme - Puppy Foundation course consists of 10 weeks.  For best results, we hope that you will attend all the classes to complete your course. To make the most of the classes and achieve optimal results, many short training sessions at home are recommended to allow you and your puppy/dog to practice the techniques and lessons we have learnt in class.

Occasionally, we may find that a class environment does not suit a puppy/dog or owner. Full discussion over the best way to proceed will be undertaken and this may result in us making alternative arrangements to assist you.

Missed classes cannot be replaced.

Our method of training relies heavily on rewards with food treats.  Although we will have some treats available at the class, it is important to bring with you a supply of tasty, smelly, high value food that your puppy/dog will work hard for and is used to eating.  Preferably soft and pea-sized.

Puppies

Puppies must be fully vaccinated. Your vet will advise you when it is safe for your puppy to attend. If you are unsure about vaccinations please consult your vet directly. This is for the safety of your puppy and therefore NO exceptions can be made. It is your responsibility to have your puppy vaccinated. (NB: Homeopathic nosodes are not considered an acceptable alternative to conventional vaccines for young puppies) Only puppies under the age of 24 weeks on the start date of the course will be accepted. Although we make every effort to allow your puppy to play with other suitable puppies in the class for short periods, we cannot guarantee the right mix of puppies at every class for this to be done safely. Consequently, puppy play may not occur in all classes.

Children in classes

Any children attending the classes must be under the supervision of a responsible adult who must agree to prevent them from disturbing the process of learning during the class. We reserve the right to ask disruptive children not to attend future classes. Children under the age of 5 may only attend at our discretion.

By making a booking, you are accepting that participating in an activity with puppies/dogs, children and adults poses a risk of injury to yourself and your puppy. And you agree to indemnify The Good Dog Academy for all person injury and damage to property owned by you while attending the training classes. You also agree to make any person who accompanies you to the class aware that they are also there at their own risk.

Training Class/Premises Rules

All puppies/dogs must remain on a lead at all times unless specifically instructed by the Trainer. Your puppy/dog may wear a harness, but unless advised by a vet he/she should be on a collar for training. If you wish to use a head collar, please discuss this with us first.

The following items are NOT PERMITTED in classes in any circumstances: choker chains and/or check chains of any description: electronic training collars including citronella: any other device that causes pain, discomfort or fear to the dog: prong or pinch collars: any other equipment that the Trainer deems unacceptable. The use of physical force and punishment-based or ‘dominance’ training techniques are NOT permitted in classes.

Extendable leads are not recommended for training your dog.

You must clean up if you dog toilets on the premises.

Refunds and cancellations

Refunds may not be given for any cancellations unless the place can be filled by another client, but will not be given if the cancellation if made by you within 48 hours of the start of the course. We may be able to transfer or defer your place to another course but this is at our discretion. For Puppy classes, this is also dependent on the age of your puppy at the start of the next available course. There will be no partial refunds for missed classes. If you miss two classes without explanation I will assume you have left the course.

All other cancellations and refund requests are at our discretion and dependent on individual circumstances. If a class has to be cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control, a refund will not automatically be given but every effort will be made to rearrange a replacement class on an alternative day.
